Biaxial nematic order induced by smectic fluctuations.
We report on a series of measurements on the microscopic structure and the magneto-optical properties of a calamitic liquid crystalline compound in its nematic phase. Structural studies show the existence of short-range, tilted smectic order consistent with pretransitional effects above an underlying smectic phase. Concomitantly, magneto-optical results exhibit the existence of an optic axis no...
متن کاملImpact of spin-orbit coupling on quantum Hall nematic phases.
Anisotropic charge transport is observed in a two-dimensional (2D) hole system in a perpendicular magnetic field at filling factors nu=7/2, nu=11/2, and nu=13/2 at low temperature. In stark contrast, the transport at nu=9/2 is isotropic for all temperatures. Isotropic hole transport at nu=7/2 is restored for sufficiently low 2D densities or an asymmetric confining potential. The density and sym...
متن کاملRototranslational diffusion of biaxial probes in uniaxial liquid crystal phases
We discuss the problem of rototranslational diffusion of a rigid biaxial molecule dissolved in a uniaxial smectic liquid crystal phase. We examine distorted rod and disk like molecules and show how biaxiality and rototranslational coupling can produce significant effects on some of the correlation functions and spectral densities most useful in analyzing experimental observables.
متن کاملRotational diffusion of uniaxial probes in biaxial liquid crystal phases
We discuss the reorientation of a cylindrically symmetric probe in a biaxial orthorombic medium, such as a biaxial nematic. We write down and solve for the first time the rotational diffusion equation for a rod-like or disc-like uniaxial probe reorienting in a medium of biaxial symmetry. We calculate first and second rank correlation functions both in the uniaxial and biaxial phase, giving the ...
متن کاملCharacterization of geometric structures of biaxial nematic phases
The ordering matrix, which was originally introduced by de Gennes, is a well-known mathematical device for describing orientational order of biaxial nematic liquid crystal. In this paper we propose a new interpretation of the ordering matrix. We slightly modify the definition of the ordering matrix and call it the geometric order parameter. The geometric order parameter is a linear transformati...
